Caltech-MIT-IBS Science Pioneer Fellowship (CMI-SPF)

Y-IBM과학원 나노의학연구단

CMI Science Pioneer Fellowship (hereafter CMI-SPF) offers outstanding Korean researchers the opportunity to promote career developments and to strengthen global scientific research experiences at the three world-class institutions; Caltech, MIT, and Institute for Basic Science Center for NanoMedicine (IBS CNM). The primary emphasis of this fellowship is on conducting collaborative research over a wide range of themes including nanomaterials for bioimaging, imaging science, synthetic biology, and bioengineering. The selected fellow will join a research team of PIs from either Caltech-IBS or MIT-IBS. CMI-SPF is offered a term of maximum three years and the selected fellow will receive a stipend of 60M KRW (approx. 55,000USD) and travel support (up to 6,000USD) per year.

Program Guidelines:

Start Date:

Negotiable

Contract Type

a. Maximum three years: A successful candidate (hereafter referred as a CMI Fellow) will have dual affiliations and work for the two institutions (e.g. Caltech-IBS or MIT-IBS).

b. CMI Fellow will carry out world class researches utilizing the resources of both institutions with flexibility in residence time at both institutions.

c. CMI Fellow is required to make biannual visits to a counterpart institution (either home or host institution) for two weeks period per visit.

d. Fellowship renewal will be determined by annual performance evaluation and budget status.

Qualifications & Eligibilities:

a. A PhD or PhD candidate in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or related fields is a suitable applicant for the fellowship.

b. This Fellowship is eligible to South Korean nationals.

Compensations & Benefits:

a. CMI Fellow will receive a stipend of 60M KRW (approx. 55,000 USD) per year supported by IBS CNM.

b. Travel expenses (e.g. economy air fare) for biannual visits to a partner institution can be sponsored by IBS upon request.

c. Research funding and health insurance are sponsored by an institution of CMI Fellow’s research location. For example, if the fellow carries out research at a partner institution for one year, research materials and health insurance will be covered by a partner institution during that research period, and vice versa. Please note, financial supplement from host institution to this fellowship is not allowed.

Responsibilities of CMI-SPF Scholars

A.    CMI Fellow is expected to explore joint research topics and to extend research collaboration between IBS CNM and a partner institution.

B.    Detailed research plans including specific aims and milestones should be submitted (template will be provided) and get approved by PIs within 2 months after starting date.

C.    CMI Fellow will attend the annual workshops to promote associations among other Fellows.

D.    CMI Fellow is required to submit a biannual progress report, and an annual report towards the end of each year, detailing the progress of the Fellow’s research to both affiliated institutions.
