The Laboratory for Virtual Augmentation and Simulation for Surgery and Therapy (VASST laboratory) at Robarts is dedicated to the development of methodologies for performing interventions in the human body using pre-and intra-operative images for Guidance. It is a key part of the BrainsCAN program, and through a recently funded CFI will provide resources to BrainsCAN personnel for neurological intervention on NHP models. This position will focus on the development of software and integration of hardware components adapt state-of-the art technology provided by CFI to assist in the guidance of neurological procedures, based on pre-operative MR and CT, as well as intra-operative modalities such as ultrasound, optical coherence tomography and Raman Spectrometry.
The Research Hardware Engineer works with researchers, trainees and students to define, develop, test, analyze, and maintain hardware and software tools related to image-guided neuro interventions. The incumbent will design, develop, install, test, and maintain devices and/or software targeted at integrating new and existing equipment or workflows relating to image-guided neuro-surgery. The Research Hardware Engineer provides theoretical and technical advice and input into all stages of the system development processes, from brainstorming to implementation and hardware and software management. The incumbent will provide guidance to other members of the VASST team, ensuring projects remain on track and researchers continue to receive the best possible service. The Research Hardware Engineer is responsible for continuous research, analysis, and acquisition of new knowledge regarding relevant hardware and software developments.
The incumbent will liaise closely with hardware and software developers both in the VASST lab and within the wider BrainsCAN community, communicating and working with the team and interacting with commercial hardware and software partners as required.
•Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Medical Imaging
•Proficiency in a variety of design tools used by the research team and collaborators
•7 years’ experience in systems integration and development
•4 years’ experience with device design, implementation, and testing
•4 years’ experience supporting hardware development for a large research team is preferred
•2 years’ experience in software for CAD and electronics design is preferred
•2 years’ experience with metal and plastic manufacturing processes would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
•Knowledge of position tracking devices, including optical, electromagnetic, and camera trackers
•Able to explore and identify a devices capabilities, inputs and outputs, and design and implement an interface to commonly used software tools
•Able to design and manufacture parts used for adaptation and integration in a variety of materials
•Ability to interface multiple components together to design and implement a solution for data capture
•Ability to implement corrective actions based on the immediate context of a situation, follow-up questions, and solicited input.
•Ability to successfully lead small group discussions with researchers and colleagues.
•Takes initiative to gather data that helps identify and differentiate the symptoms and root causes of defined problems.
•Excels at writing clear, concise procedural documentation
